School building’s across the UK are subject to regular maintenance & development during which time building contractors can often be forced to carry out works on school premises during school hours. Ideally projects would be undertaken within school holidays but sometimes this is unachievable. In this situation, given the potential dangers involved, particular care must be taken by the contactor & the school to ensure any risks involved are minimised.
Building work can create many potential hazards such as holes, piles of building debris & various other obstacles with also the delivery of new material’s, equipment & plant machinery can attract children into areas of potential danger. It is extremely important that all involved are aware of these risks & comply with all reasonable Health & Safety standards.
All Mk1 Scaffolding Operatives are Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) checked & have received the relevant training with regards to working on school premises.
When working on schools the safety of the Children/Staff is paramount & is achieved by following methods:
- Implementing clear segregation methods between work areas & children/staff at all times using Heras Fencing or Chapter 8 barriers with clear signage displayed to eliminate any risks of contact.
- Removing all access to scaffolding from ground floor levels by removing ladders, installing ladder locks & padlocking access gates when using system staircases.
- Instating double boarding & polythene sheeting on working platforms where needed & fixing protection foam sleeving to all ground level tubing in areas of direct contact.
